Independent HPC Acceptance Testing for Verified System Readiness
Acceptance testing is your safety net, and your launchpad. Before HPC goes live, rigorous testing ensures the solution actually delivers what the business needs. It’s where assumptions are challenged, performance is validated, and real-world readiness is proven. Skipping or rushing this phase risks costly rework, user frustration, and wasted investment.
- Capture acceptance criteria with stakeholders and technical users to ensure validation reflects expected usage rather than abstract performance metrics.
- Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) to validate results, ensure consistency, and confirm performance matches or exceeds benchmarks.
- Run workload-informed test executions using representative job profiles to validate real performance characteristics.
- Measure throughput, stability and resource utilisation across compute, network and storage to confirm the system behaves as intended.
- Validate scheduler configuration and queue policies to ensure jobs are prioritised, routed and executed as designed.
- Test data handling workflows across storage layers so that staging, scratch and archive paths operate without unexpected bottlenecks.
- Incorporate user interaction during testing to surface operational friction early and make adjustments before go live.
- Provide a structured acceptance pack for sign off, including results, configuration records and recommendations for initial production usage.

FAQs
Acceptance testing is most effective when it mirrors how the system will be used in practice rather than relying on synthetic tests alone. Running representative workloads under realistic queue conditions gives a clearer view of real-world readiness and helps surface issues that would not appear in isolated performance checks.
Acceptance criteria gain usefulness when they reflect user expectations for turnaround time, queue response and failure recovery, not just peak performance numbers. Including behavioural checks, such as how the scheduler handles mixed workloads or reruns failed jobs, creates a better indication of how the platform will behave once fully operational.
Hardware benchmarks provide a useful indication of the maximum performance achievable by a given HPC system. However, application-level testing provides better assurance than hardware benchmarks alone. Running key applications with realistic datasets and comparing completion patterns against known baselines confirms whether performance improvements translate into real gains for users.
Sign-off holds more weight when linked to a clear set of validated outcomes tied to defined operational expectations. Structuring acceptance results into a decision point, rather than a checklist, helps ensure commissioning is based on readiness for real use rather than completion of technical steps.
