Creating the best value from an Azure HPC Cloud solution for Renewable Energy Solutions
The Customer
RES (Renewable Energy Systems) is one of the world’s largest independent renewable energy companies, active in wind, solar, energy storage, transmission, and distribution.
Their services include climate modelling to determine best locations, negotiating real estate acquisitions, designing and manufacturing the associated turbines and solar panels, and deploying products with full grid integration.

The Challenge
Their existing on-site compute clusters were struggling with increasing workload and had become disproportionately expensive to maintain. They decided to procure a cloud-based HPC solution.
What did Red Oak Consulting do?
Following a successful partnership with Microsoft providing a solution for renewable energy firm Nergica, RES were keen to evaluate an Azure cloud solution for their Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) application environment.
Microsoft invited Red Oak Consulting to join the project as an independent expert consultancy. We were asked to scope the HPC migration, working closely with all parties.
We concluded that RES would get greater value from the Cloud if the company scaled its entire WRF computing environment, not just the application processes.
Red Oak replicated the existing cluster configuration in Azure to deliver the speed and scalability required, and optimised HPC workloads.
The work done by Red Oak ensured that that cost efficiency was maintained in the new, dynamic HPC system.
It’s opened up a whole lot of opportunities for us which we hadn’t had available before, and it’s making us think about things in an entirely different way."
